Hysterectomy
Hysterectomy means to remove a woman’s uterus by surgery. After a hysterectomy, women will not experience periods again and cannot get pregnant. It is possible that during the hysterectomy, the doctor also removes ovaries too (oophorectomy); in such a situation, female sex hormones will be reduced and other symptoms of menopause will appear. Oophorectomy (during a hysterectomy surgery) may be done accidentally or in order to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer. The most common reasons to have a hysterectomy are curing uterine cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine fibroids (myomas), endometriosis and uterine prolapse. Although his procedure (after C-section) is the second most common surgery among women, it is suggested only in the above mentioned situations and as the last resort.
How does hysterectomy perform?
This surgery performs under general anesthesia and your doctor will choose one of the following approaches, according to your disorder and medical condition.
Open hysterectomy
Abdominal hysterectomy: The surgeon makes an incision in the lower abdomen to remove the uterus.

Laparoscopic hysterectomy
A laparoscope is a thin tube with a tiny camera that helps doctors to view the pelvic cavity. In this procedure, the surgeon makes small incisions in the abdomen or vagina and inserts the laparoscope to remove the uterus. It is worthy to note that this procedure cannot be used for uterine fibroid (myomas).
The recovery time depends on your medical condition, the reason for the hysterectomy, and the way of doing hysterectomy but usually it takes 4 to 6 weeks to heal after abdominal surgery and 3 to 4 weeks to recover after vaginal or laparoscopic surgery. The duration of hospital stay depends on your underlying diseases.
