Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
ICSI is an assisted-reproductive treatment in which a single sperm cell is injected directly into the cytoplasm of an egg in vitro fertilization. It is used in all cases that sperm may not reach the egg, including fallopian tube closure, pelvic adhesion, deficiency in semen, abnormal sperm morphology, poor sperm as well as low sperm mobility.
In the IVF procedure, sperms and eggs are placed together for fertilization to occur. In some cases, sperm, however, is unable to move to egg and digest its surrounding issue. Then, successful fertilization doesn’t occur. Like usual IVF procedures, physician, in such conditions, extracts mature eggs by injecting hormones into the mother. Next, the coating around the egg is removed by enzymes, and sperm is injected through a special needle into the egg.
How does CISI work?
At first, the physician stimulates follicle growth, oocyte maturation as well as ovulation by prescribing steroid hormones and injecting HMG and HCG into the mother’s body. When the mother gained full consciousness or in some cases through tranquilizer and local anesthesia, an egg is extracted by the physician for the mother’s comfort. In this step, special catheters for the egg are separated from the mother’s body by ultrasound. Such a mature egg is exposed to certain enzymes to get ready for injecting semen into her own body. After the sperm is injected into the egg and the egg cell is formed, the embryo is transported to the uterus. like IVF, in ICSI, a number of embryos are entered the uterus to increase the chance of successful pregnancy and implantation as well. Therefore, there is a chance of multiple pregnancies too.
