Orthognathic surgery (Jaw surgery)
The jawbones, nasal bones, and cheekbones are 3 top bones that shape the face and its attractiveness. The shape and size asymmetries of jawbones which can result from congenital problems or trauma have a great effect on the attractiveness of one’s face. Such facial asymmetries can lower self-esteem and harm personal satisfaction. It is possible to modify the jawbones and the shape of face and teeth by means of orthognathic surgery. Orthognathic or corrective jaw surgery can be performed in the following cases:
- The upper or lower jaw is too backward or forward
- A narrow jaw
- Asymmetrical jaw
- Chronic jaw pain
- Subconscious mouth breathing
- Uneven lips and problems in biting and chewing
- Jaw deformity due to bone tumor
- Some patients who suffer sleep apnea
- Severe overcrowding teeth, in addition to orthodontics, needs orthognathic surgery. In such a situation, oral and maxillofacial surgeon makes the structural modifications and after a full recovery, the orthodontist will correct the teeth arrangement. The patient might need to go under orthodontics treatment before surgery.
How does orthognathic surgery perform?
Depends on the surgery technique and the need for one jaw or both of them to be corrected, it may take 1 to 4 hours. The surgery performs under general anesthesia and the surgeon makes some incisions inside the mouth.it is possible that the surgeon makes some incisions on the outer parts of jaws. The jaws’ shape will be corrected by considering the needs of the patient; for example, if one jaw is more forward or back than the other one, the surgeon will move it and cut the extra jawbones. If the jaw is narrow and needs an extra bone, the surgeon will use a portion of the patient’s rib and put that portion in the correct place. After that, he/she will use special plates and screws to fix the position of bones. At last, the surgeon will return the soft tissues and skin to their places to cover the bones. The surgeon will stitch the incisions and if it is needed, will use rubber bands, orthodontics braces, and wires which call arch-bars temporarily to remain secure and the surgery has a better result.
